Use one single (custom) post to add multiple locations on the map

The plugin provides the possibility to add multiple/unlimited locations on the map using one single (custom) post. Before we start to explain how to do that, these are some notes to remember:

  • When you use this method to add multiple locations, you should know that there’s no way to distinguish each location by a different title, content and/or featured image. For that particular reason, all the locations will share the same title, content, excerpt, link and featured image!
  • In the map, you’ll see multiple markers/pin in different locations that have the same infobox image, title and content!
  • In the carousel that comes with the map, you’ll see multiple items that have the same thumbnail, title and content!
  • This feature doesn’t work with the extension “List & Filter”.

When to use this method?

This method is commonly used in the following situations:

1- When a customer doesn’t want to use infoboxes and the carousel at all. Their aim is to have the possibility to display a map with multiple markers on it.

2- When a customer wants to use the infoboxes and the carousel, but, among the locations of the map, there’s a particular place that can be found on multiple locations. For example, a customer has a restaurants map of their town, among the restaurants there’s “MacDonald’s”. As you know, it’s common to have many “MacDonald’s” in the same town!

For our customer, all they want is to allow their website visitors to find all the locations where they can find that particular restaurant. Without the option of adding multiple locations using the same post, our customer will have to create a new post for each location of “MacDonald’s”. In general, all “MacDonald’s” posts will have the same title and image, maybe the same content too. To prevent this, our customer will create one single “MacDonald’s” post, each time they want to add a new location of that restaurant, they’ll use the same post already created.

How to add your locations?

You may encounter two different situations when you want to add more locations. The first one consists that you only know the address of the locations to add. The second situation consists that you know the exact coordinates (Latitude & Longitude) of your locations.

The following instructions will work for both situations. Please pay attention to the details!

Let’s imagine that you want to use a (custom) post to display 5 locations on the map.

1 – Add or Edit a post/location. Scroll down to the widget/area titled “Progress Map: Add Locations” and click on the menu GPS Coordinates”.

Please note that if you leave the fields “Latitude” and “Longitude” empty, your location(s) will not be visible on the map. You should always put the coordinates of one location in these fields, then, you can move to the step 2!

Now, you’ve provided one of the 5 locations. Still 4 locations to add!

2 – All the other 4 locations should be entered in the field “Add more locations”. To do that:

In case you know/have the Address :

Enter the address of another location in the field “Enter an address”, then, click on the button “Search”. As a result, the map (below the search field) will move the marker to your location position. What you need to do next, is to convert that address to valid coordinates (Latitude & Longitude).

To convert the address to “Latitude” & “Longitude”, click on the button “Add more locations”. The coordinates will be automatically pasted in the field (textarea) “Add more locations”. Once done, do not click on any other button!

In case you know/have the valid coordinates (Latitude & Longitude):

Enter the coordinates of another location in the field “Enter an address”. Do not click on the button “Search”, instead, click on the button “Add more locations”. The coordinates will be automatically pasted in the field (textarea) “Add more locations”. Once done, do not click on any other button!

Now, you’ve entred two of the 5 locations. Still 3 locations to add! Repeat the same steps for the 3 remaining locations!

3 – Once you’ve finished, click on the button Publish/Update” to save your (custom) post.
